Every summer for three years now LSU Atlanta has invited all incoming LSU freshmen from Georgia and their families to a dessert social to welcome them to the Tiger family. This year, of the 88 Georgia students registered to go to LSU, we had 27 join us- smashing our record by more than double. One incoming freshman, Melody Rowe, was recipient of a prestigious and coveted LSU Top 100 Scholar award.
The 2010 Sweet Send Off was held July 25th at the Briarcliff Woods Beach Club in Dekalb County. More than 70 showed up, including students, family members and local alumni. Four current LSU students, including Atlanta scholarship recipients Amanda Perrillioux (2008), Lexi Rook and Ariel Abamonte (2009), came to share information and encouragement. Another special guest was Warren Quirett, LSU's recruiting and financial aid officer for Georgia, who came up from Baton Rouge to welcome the new Tiger cubs.
Our thanks to Glen Helmstetter of Copeland's Famous New Orleans Restaurants of Atlanta and Kevin Ashford of Catered Cakes for providing tasty dessert treats that were gobbled up by the throng.
Two LSU Atlanta Scholarships Awards for 2010
Thanks to all of our members and supporters who have participated in our raffles, auctions and other fund raisers, LSU Atlanta has now completed TWO endowments that will award $1,000 each year as incentive scholarships for Georgia's best high school students to go to LSU.
Two students who attended the Sweet Send Off were recipients of our scholarships: Ben Papac, a graduate of The Eagle's Nest Eluminatus who plans to study vocal performance and creative writing; and Hayato DeSouza of Brookwood High School who expects to major in Mechanical Engineering. Both met stringent grade and ACT/SAT requirements set forth in our scholarship guidelines, which are designed to attract the best and the brightest to LSU.
We can ALL be proud of our accomplishments to build our scholarship endowment program and help great students with love for LSU to go to college in Baton Rouge.
