2010 LSU ATLANTA CRAWFISH GUIDE

Metro Atlanta is fortunate to have many places to enjoy boiled crawfish and crawfish dishes. Read on for our listings and please patronize these sponsors and tell them “thanks!” for supporting your LSU Atlanta alumni chapter.

The word we are hearing is that this year's crawfish crop has been slower to develop due to the colder than normal weather in Louisiana.  As a result early supply has been less and prices are a bit higher than last year.  However, our sources say that the silver lining is that the season will be longer and prices will come down when our crusty friends decide the coast is clear to come out. So look for crawfish season to last all through June and possibly into July this year!

This guide is organized in two sections: An alphabetical listing of who has boiled and live crawfish, followed by restaurants that offer crawfish dishes on their menus. Some will be having special promotions that we will update and share in our free email newsletter during the season.

Catering Cajun of Georgia

2409 Shallowford Rd., East Cobb * (678) 237-2256

www.cateringcajun.net

Catering Cajun of Georgia has been Atlanta’s steady source for catered crawfish boils, boiled bugs by the pound and sales of live crawfish for over 6 years.  In fact, Catering Cajun has outgrown its original location and has found a new home in East Cobb at the corner of Trickum and Shallowford near Lassiter High School.  Catering boils, BBQs and corporate and private functions is still the focus, but the new store offers refrigerated cases of smoked meats, pre-cooked Cajun specialties and seasonings to take home.

When it comes to crawfish, owner Scott Hayes has been responsible for the demise of so many of the crustaceans that there has to be a “Wanted” poster in da swamp somewhere with his mug on it. Their crawfish comes from Mamou and Bazile, La. The company owns two large boiling rig trailers that handle most of the largest crawfish events in the region, including LSU’s boil on May 8.  Whether you want a cooler or sack already boiled, or need sack(s) and seasoning to do it yourself, or would like a crawfish boil catered for 50 to 5,000, call Catering Cajun at 678-237-2256 or Scott Hayes 404-643-2000 (cell).

Henry’s Louisiana Grill

4835 N.Main St, Acworth * (770) 966-1515

www.chefhenrys.com

There’s no bigger crawfish lover – or LSU fan – in metro Atlanta than chef Henry Chandler, and his Acworth restaurant is a true “destination” for enjoying Louisiana cuisine, including royal treatment of crawfish. Regular items on the menu that contain crawfish are popcorn crawfish appetizer, the seafood fondeaux, etoufee, Cajun sampler, & bayou cakes.  However, it’s nearly impossible to bypass Henry's Louisiana OOH LA LA! featuring your choice of oysters, shrimp or crawfish - flash fried and tossed with Tasso, spinach and roasted garlic in Henry's spicy cream sauce and served over angel hair pasta.  The dish was named one of the top 50 dishes to drive for by the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Boiled crawfish will be available every Wednesday night during crawfish season. Don't forget to pick your pony in the Crawfish Races that benefits the Ga. Transplant Foundation!  Boiled bugs will be sold by the pound and takeout of 5 pounds or 10 pounds; anything over 5 pounds for takeout needs to be ordered 72 hours in advance.  You can also order live crawfish by the sack, small amounts, or by the pound.  Please contact Page Hoover, kitchen manager, at 770-966-1515 for live and large takeout orders.  They prefer cash, and will even lend out a boiling pot and blower. Boil packs will be provided for an extra charge.

Henry’s also sells crawfish theme t-shirts.  On a related note (beer and crawfish are perfectly matched) they have an ongoing Abita beer promotion: purchase a 64oz growler of Abita beer for $15.95. You may bring it back at anytime and refill it for $10.95.
