After an open date, LSU returns to action this week as the No. 3 Tigers travel to the Swamp in Gainesville to face No. 11 Florida Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. LSU brings a 4-0 overall mark and a 2-0 league record into the contest, while the Gators are 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action. Last year, LSU posted a 28-24 win over Florida in Tiger Stadium on its way to claiming the 2007 BCS National Championship.
Can't make it to Gainesville for the game? Join us for a taste of Tiger Stadium in Atlanta. LSU Atlanta's official view-in location is Rio Grande Cantina in Buckhead (3227 Roswell Rd, http://www.riograndeatl.com). New for 2008, Buffalo Wild Wings in Alpharetta (2375 Mansell Road, 678-352-4599) has been added as a Northside view-in location.
LSU's game against Florida on Saturday will be a BCS first as it will mark the first time that two teams who have won the previous two BCS National Championships will meet. Since the inception of the BCS in 1998, no two teams who have combined to win the two previous BCS national titles have ever met on the football field. The last time that the two previous national champions squared off came in 1990 when Notre Dame (1988 champ) beat Miami (1989 champ), 29-20 in South Bend. The LSU-Florida game will mark the 10th time in the history of college football that the last two national champions will meet the following year.
SPOTLIGHT:
Linebacker Darry Beckwith
Sidelined since the North Texas game with a knee injury, Beckwith returns to the field for the Tigers. In his absence the Tigers have struggled some on defense, with missed assignments and struggles to cover running backs in pass patterns. LSU looks forward to Beckwith's presence in the middle, to set the defense pre-snap and set the tone for guys coming over the middle post-snap.
WORTH NOTING:
An LSU win on Saturday will give the Tigers back-to-back 5-0 starts for the first time since 1972-73 ... LSU is 4-0 in back-to-back years for the first time since 1972-73 ... LSU won its first seven games in 1972 and followed that by winning nine in a row to open the 1973 season ... Last year, LSU won its first six games before falling to Kentucky in triple-overtime ... LSU has allowed only three points in the first quarter this year ... LSU has scored at least 21 points in every game (28 straight) since their last trip to the Swamp when Florida held the Tigers to 10 points in a 23-10 win over LSU ... LSU current tailbacks (not counting fullbacks) have carried the ball 378 consecutive times without losing a fumble.
Les Miles' list of achievements at LSU is both lengthy and impressive. However, perhaps the most impressive item on his list of accomplishments is the fact that he ranks first in SEC history for wins after 44 games with 38. Miles' 38 wins puts him ahead of such names as Mark Richt (35), Steve Spurrier (34) and Bernie Moore (33). The following is a quick look at some of Miles' highlights during his four years with the Tigers:
Only coach in LSU history to beat Auburn, Florida and Alabama in same season - and he's done it twice
Only first-year coach in SEC history to lead team to league's title game
Has 6 wins over coaches who have won national titles
Coached LSU to 10-plus wins in three straight seasons - a first at the school
Only coach in LSU history to lead Tigers to three straight top five final rankings
LSU goes into the Florida game having won 19 straight night games. The 19 straight wins at night (note: NCAA determines that a kickoff at 5 p.m. or later is a night game) includes three games this year, seven games in 2007, eight in 2006 and the win over Miami in the Peach Bowl to cap the 2005 season. LSU hasn't lost a night game since a 34-14 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game in 2005. Overall, LSU coach Les Miles has guided the Tigers to a 25-2 mark in night games, which includes a 4-0 mark in road night games.
