NEW FACULTY: (from lsu.edu) E. W. Plummer, one of the world's leading physicists, will join the LSU faculty as special assistant to the vice chancellor of research and economic development and professor of physics and astronomy in January.
Plummer is the first National Academy of Sciences member to join LSU's faculty in the history of the university. Equally important to the LSU materials science initiative at LSU are the five other new hires: Professor Mark Jarrell, Associate Professor Rongying Jin, Assistant Professor Juana Moreno, Associate Professor Shane Stadler and Professor Jiandi Zhang.
Materials science is the fabrication, analysis and theoretical understanding of the basic properties of materials, allowing the design of stronger, more lightweight materials for use in aircraft and automobiles; more advanced magnetic materials allowing for greater data storage on computers; faster and more reliable electronic materials used in cell phones and DVD players; and new and improved "lab on a chip" technology that has homeland security applications.
"One of the goals of the MHI is to support the Flagship Agenda through attracting and retaining nationally recognized faculty,"said LSU Chancellor Michael Martin. "Having Plummer join the LSU family is definitely a major step in the right direction, and with his input and impressive body of work, we are gaining the momentum needed for the university to meet and even surpass its goals."

HIGH HONOR: (from lsu.edu) Mark Batzer, LSU alumnus and one of the university’s most prominent faculty members, was recently named an LSU System Boyd Professor, the highest academic rank at the university, by the LSU Board of Supervisors at its August Meeting.
Batzer, who holds the title of Dr. Mary Lou Applewhite Distinguished Professor in Biological Sciences, becomes the 66th LSU System faculty member to achieve Boyd status in the 55 years since the honor was created.
"His work has contributed significantly to our understanding of the genetic diversity of humans," said Kevin Carman, dean of the LSU College of Basic Sciences, who noted that Batzer’s work has the potential for advancing disease prevention and producing a better understanding of evolution. Batzer’s research has also resulted in several patents that are currently being used in forensic DNA analysis by companies such as Reliagene, Inc. of New Orleans.

MOBILE CLASSROOM: (from lsu.edu) Representatives from LSU's Louisiana Business & Technology Center and its partner organizations, the U. S. Small Business Administration and the Louisiana Economic Development, will be providing free recovery information for small business owners via the LBTC's Mobile Classroom.
Beginning Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Operations Center in Port Lafourche, the Mobile Classroom will operate daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., until there is no longer a demand for its services in the area. The Operations Center is located at 108 A.O. Rappelet Road. The LBTC Mobile Classroom, the face of the LBTC's Driving Louisiana's Economy initiative, is a retrofitted semi-trailer designed to host seminars and workshops for small business owners.
The Louisiana Business & Technology Center, an integral part of LSU's E. J. Ourso College of Business' Stephenson Entrepreneurship Institute, endeavors to enhance economic development in Louisiana through the support of existing small businesses and the development of new businesses. Established in 1988, the LBTC's highly successful business incubator program has been honored as the National Business Incubator Association's Incubator of the Year. LSU GEORGIA PLATES: The LSU Atlanta chapter is now accepting applications to have special LSU plates manufactured by the state:
Georgia Department of Revenue Commissioner Bart L. Graham has approved the LSU Atlanta Alumni Chapter's request for special interest or commemorative license plates in the state of Georgia. We have until April 24, 2010 to collect 1,000 pre-paid applications for the plates. If we reach 1,000 applications, the state will begin production, and LSU can join Auburn, Florida and Clemson as out-of-state schools with Georgia plates. With the Tiger football team treating the Georgia Dome like their home field (6-1, three SEC titles) -- and thousands of LSU alumni and fans across the state -- the LSU Atlanta chapter figured it was time we have our own Georgia plates, too. Details on how to apply for a plate, and a downloadable application, can be found at lsuatlanta.com: Application information for LSU plates in Georgia
