Sweet Send Off 2012: Young Tigers Meet and Greet Before Going to LSU

Approximately 104 students from Georgia high schools will be entering LSU this fall.   LSU Atlanta hosted more than 25 of these students from the metro Atlanta area at our 5th Annual Sweet Send Off reception, which was held this year at North Atlanta High School.  The excited young Tigers, most accompanied by interested parents and friends, took advantage of this opportunity to meet each other, hear about LSU from current and former students and to be "welcomed into the LSU family" by several chapter board members and volunteers.

Several special guests from Baton Rouge also created even greater impact on the event.  Assistant Vice Chancellor of the Division of Student Life and Enrollment Darrell Ray. Dean Gaines Foster and Jill Roshto from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Sarah Courtney from Manship School of Mass Communications all gave their perspectives and tips about the LSU experience to the eager listeners.

Each of the new freshmen introduced themselves and expressed why they chose LSU.  A majority of them (and their parents) noted that LSU was very inviting and friendly and that they felt welcomed with their campus visits and contacts with LSU.  The LSU Atlanta alumni chapter reflected this spirit of hospitality with the Sweet Send Off and invited family members to not be strangers and to join us at our view ins and events.

LSU Specialty Plate Update - Here They Come!
It's tested everyone's patience for several months, but the state of Georgia has finally got our Eye of the Tiger specialty LSU  license plate ready to produce and everyone who ordered one will get theirs shortly. This is how it will work by direction of the state::
PHASE ONE: 1-100 Number Plates Go First
  • According to the latest instructions, the premium tags numbered 1-100 that were reserved by premium price will be processed first.
  • Chapter President Chris Tilley has triple checked the reservation list for these plates and re-submitted it for processing.
  • These plates will be sent to print and shipped to a tag office in the county where you ordered it.  Hopefully they will match zip codes to identify the county office nearest to you.
  • The state will mail a notice to the 1-100 numbered recipients advising their plate is at the designated tag office for pickup.  You will need to bring the $25 MANUFACTURING FEE RECEIPT and pay the standard required annual specialty tag fee to complete the pickup.
  • The state has already issued all 1,000 manufacturing fee receipts to the chapter to distribute. We feel strongly that we need to personally issue these receipts and get a signature to have a record of what has been delivered.
RECEIPT DISTRIBUTION FOR 1-100 NUMBERED TAG HOLDERS:

Next Saturday 7/28/12 from Noon until 4 PM
Buckhead Saloon
3227 Roswell Rd. in Buckhead

An email from Chris Tilley will go out to everyone on this list with this information soon.
PHASE TWO: All Regular Specialty Tag Orders Go Next
  • The state instructed us to allow some time for the 1-100 plates to be processed and picked up before proceeding with unassigned number plate processing. Sorry, this is how they want it done but our goal is to distribute all receipts before the end of August, hopefully sooner.
  • We will set up locations and dates in August where chapter representatives will be set up to hand out your $25 manufacturing receipts that YOU MUST HAVE with you when you go to the tag office.
  • You will proceed to any tag office near you to process and pay whatever specialty fee required and they will order the tag and then ship it directly to you.  They will issue you a paper temporary tag to use while the plate is being shipped.
  • They promise the shipping time will not be long.
Manufacturing Fee Receipt Pickup Information Will Be Announced Next Week!
Again, THANKS for your support and patience in this protracted and involved process. We're happy that the logjam has been broken and we will all have our plates early in the football season!

2012 LSU Atlanta Crawfish Guide

2012 LSU ATLANTA CRAWFISH GUIDE

UPDATE 6/5/12:  We're hearing that the supply is lowering so if you want live or boiled crawfish you need to act before Father's Day weekend.  Please refer to the info below for contacts to inquire, and remember that you need to order live bugs early in the week to ensure an order.

Crawfish Season Overview: As in the past two years, this year's crawfish crop started slow.  Early supply was spotty and prices were at historic highs. Many of our sponsor partners waited to offer crawfish until things settled down.  Usually prices are best after Easter passes.  The good news is that now it has moderated and the pungent aroma of spicy mudbugs is again in the air.  Our impeccable Looziana source Clawde A. Touffee (shown above) thinks the season will extend a couple extra weeks into June like last year.

Clawde also says the LSU Atlanta Crawfish Craze on April 21 will be perfectly timed for seeing some nice big tailed, fat-headed, eazy peelin' crustaceans coming out of the basket!

Metro Atlanta is fortunate to have many places to enjoy boiled crawfish and crawfish dishes. Read on for our listings and please patronize these sponsors and tell them “thanks!” for supporting your LSU Atlanta alumni chapter. This guide has an alphabetical listing of who has boiled and live crawfish, followed by restaurants that offer crawfish dishes on their menus. 2012 Crawfish Boil Will Feature New Orleans Sounds

Thanks to sharp-eared LSU alum Harold Engler, we were alerted to a new band in Atlanta called The Mar-Tans that prominently features the sounds of New Orleans and Memphis in its repertoire. And thanks to our Champion Sponsor Duffy Realty of Atlanta, we are able to bring The Mar-Tans to the 2012 edition of "Crawfish Craze in Red Clay Country" on Saturday, April 21st at Bayou Allatoona (Corps of Engineers Riverside Park at Lake Allatoona).  Mark the date, more details and opening of sales will come over the next week.

The Mar-Tans may be a new band, but it is composed of seasoned professional musicians. Several members have played together for over 15 years. Check out these two clips "The Second Line"and  "Sadie/Iko Iko Medley" on Youtube from their debut show.  Keyboardist Matt Wauchope loves the piano styles of New Orleans and clearly has the likes of Huey Smith and Professor Longhair nailed down.

"If they're half as good as they sound in the clips, Atlanta has a great new band and we're in for a really good time," says New Orleans native Frank Duffy of Duffy Realty. In addition to sponsoring the band, super agent Rhonda Duffy will also contribute her professional auctioneering skills for our live auction.

Rhonda and Frank sell houses.  The Mar-Tans may bring the house down.  Watch for more Crawfish Craze news SOON!
